Whitney Robertson 17 ~ Denise Gallagher Memorial Scholarship

Dance is Whitney Robertson's outlet— it helps her express herself without words. She has been living and breathing dance for most of her life. She has been a competitive dancer, studying jazz, lyrical, contemporary, modern, novelty, and ballet.

Whitney plans to dance for the rest of her life— well, at least while she's young

When awarded a musical theatre scholarship I was at first nervous, having only been in one musical, but I'm glad I didn't let that interfere. The experience was unforgettable!

I was told I had to sing; small problem I don't sing and I definitely didn't feel comfortable singing in front of all those people! To my surprise, the music teacher later complimented me, saying I have an amazing head voice and can sing in octaves other girls cannot. To this day I still don't fully understand! From him I learned how to properly use my voice, something again that I have never done before! He also taught me how to feel more comfortable singing with an audience!

It blew me away that we were able to put on a musical in only 3 weeks and it still be a successful show, similar to the professional one! I will never forget all of the special memories I shared with the other Dance Council recipients. Working with people who share the same interests made the experience enjoyable!

In the upcoming year, I will use my newly found appreciation for theatre to better myself for auditions of the future! I wish I could return to the camp next year, but sadly, I exceed the age limit!

Sincerely, Whitney Robertson
