Lauren Burns 13 ~ Gregory Hines Memorial Scholarship

Lauren Burns was “discovered” when she was 4 years old by a pre-school volunteer who also happened to dance. She noticed her poise as Lauren danced around the nursery on her tippy toes. That year Lauren began taking dance classes and now, at 13, is a member of the senior dance company.

Lauren has participated in many local performances, including Dance Council's Tap Dance Celebration, and competes throughout the year.

Because she is interested in the entertainment industry, Lauren plans to add vocal and acting lessons to her collection of activities throughout the week.

My experience at the Dallas Summer Musical camp I took this past summer was one that I can never forget. The three weeks passed by way too fast for me and left me wanting just one more rehearsal, just one more thing to be able to learn and leave with.

The best part for me was the very comfortable and family-like atmosphere. Everyone was welcoming and became friends instantly with everyone else there. Even being the new girl wasn’t bad because of the automatic feeling that I fit in. The coaches that taught us were some of the nicest, most patient, and likable people that you just can’t help but want to be around. They worked with us as a group but also gave the participants individual goals and pointers as to how to improve. Everyone was satisfied with the decisions made by our coaches, who were very good at compromising to fit everybody’s wants. I’m so glad that I got to work and learn from these particular coaches because they are so skilled and intelligent about what they are doing. The dress rehearsal and actual performance went very smoothly and was one of the most fun things I’ve ever done. Because of our two wonderful coaches who worked very hard to prepare all of us actors and singers and dancers, our performance was a breeze and particularly professional and enjoyable.

I have learned so much from this one camp. I’ve improved in all areas of acting- performing, character building, Broadway styles of singing, and musical theatre styles of dance. This camp has also boosted my confidence to get up on front of people and put myself out there. I’m so glad I had the chance to have such a privilege as this. Next summer I’m going to be sure I get to participate in this fantastic camp again, even without a scholarship. I enjoyed meeting new people, learning great things from remarkable coaches, and having an experience I will never forget. Thank you for giving me this marvelous opportunity.
